A Study of Hell in the Bible

by Rev. Jack Barr

It is so good to hear from you again.

On your questions about Hell.

Yes there are different parts, and different punishments (Luke 12:47-48). The Bible tells us that there are Chambers (Pr 7:27), a pitor many pits (Isa. 14:15; Ezek. 31:16), has a part called Outer Darkness (Mt. 22:13; 25:30), has a bottomless Pit (Rev. 9:1-2), has a Mouth (Isa. 5:14), has a belly (Jonah 2:2), has a part called the Lowest Hell (De. 32:22; Ps 86:13), keeps enlarging itself (Isa. 5:14), has Chains (2 Pe. 2:4; Jude 1:6).

Yes it will matter in the end, for the degree of punishment one receives will be for All of Eternity. Different sins evidently will have different punishments in this sense, If you do not know that you are committing a sin, such as someone in a remote part of the world, or raised in a country where a false religion is the norm, then they will be beaten with few stripes (Luke 12:47). They will be punished but not as severely as someone who knows Christ and then goes back to sinning without repenting (Luke 12:48), for they now know what a sin is so there is no excuse, they will be punished very severely. The Unprofitable Servant of Christ, (one who produces nothing for the Lord) and the one who pretends to be a Christian (Mt. 25:30; 22:13) will be thrown into a special place called Outer Darkness.

Why is Paradise in Hades (Hell)? The reason that Paradise was in Hell, was that No One could enter Heaven without accepting Jesus Christ. So God set up a holding place for the godly.

Acts 4:10, 12 "Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, . . . . Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved".

And they could not accept Jesus until Jesus paid the price for all the O. T. saints as well as us. Nobody could enter heaven until Jesus Rose from the dead, so all of the O. T. saints were held in Paradise until that time. During the three days that Jesus was in the grave, Jesus went down into Hell and preached to the prisoners there. The O. T. saints, not the ones being punished on the other side of Hell. When Jesus came out of the grave, so did many of the O. T. Saints. This place was done away with when we could enter Heaven directly.

From the above paragraph you can see why Paradise was not in Heaven where God resides.

As to where the final heaven will be, I do not know. I do know that God will take up residence in New Jerusalem on the New Earth. If you want to call that heaven, it is alright with me. Your guess is as good as anyone else’s. The Bible does not say.

I include the following references that may help you. I have included some notes in blue.

May Jesus lead you into All God's Truth

Hell

Derived from the Saxon helan, to cover; hence the covered or the invisible place. In Scripture there are three words so rendered:

1. Sheol, occurring in the Old Testament sixty-five times. This word sheol is derived from a root-word meaning "to ask, " "demand; "hence insatiableness #Pr 30:15,16 It is rendered "grave" thirty-one times #Ge 37:35 42:38 44:29,31 1Sa 2:6 etc. The Revisers have retained this rendering in the historical books with the original word in the margin, while in the poetical books they have reversed this rule. In thirty-one cases in the Authorized Version this word is rendered "hell, "the place of disembodied spirits. The inhabitants of sheol are "the congregation of the dead" #Pr 21:16 It is:
a. the abode of the wicked #Nu 16:33 Job 24:19 Ps 9:17 31:17 etc.;
b.
b. of the good #Ps 16:10 30:3 49:15 86:13 etc. Sheol is described as:
Hell was divided into two main parts, The wicked to one part, and the good to a different part. The wicked being punished, the good just being held without punishment - see story in Luke 16:19-31 "The rich man and Lazarus". a. deep #Job 11:8
b. dark #Job 10:21,22
c. with bars #Job 17:16
d. The dead "go down" to it #Nu 16:30,33 Eze 31:15,16,17
The Bible constantly points to Hell being deep within the Earth.

2. The Greek word hades of the New Testament has the same scope of signification as sheol of the Old Testament. It is a prison #1Pe 3:19 with gates and bars and locks #Mt 16:18 Re 1:18 and it is downward #Mt 11:23 Lu 10:15 The righteous and the wicked are separated. The blessed dead are in that part of hades called paradise #Lu 23:43 They are also said to be in Abraham's bosom #Lu 16:22

The terms "Paradise" and "Abraham's Bosom" are used interchangeably to reference to that part of Hell which held the good. They were held there as prisoners until Jesus died on the cross and went down to preach to the "Prisoners", after which they came out of Hell. They were held there because they all had to wait until Jesus died for us, for it is only by and through Jesus Christ that anyone can enter heaven. Jesus told the thief on the cross that the thief would be with Him in Paradise that day, Not in Heaven, in Paradise. From the time that Jesus rose from the dead, that part of Hell has never been used to hold the Good, for the Good now can enter directly into Heaven.
3. Gehenna, in most of its occurrences in the Greek New Testament, designates the place of the lost #Mt 23:33 The fearful nature of their condition there is described in various figurative expressions #Mt 8:12 13:42 22:13 25:30 Lu 16:24 etc.

Greek, Gehenna), The place of Punishment-

#Mt 5:22,29 10:28 18:9 23:15,33 Mk 9:43 Lu 12:5 #Jas 3:6

Torment

Gr. basanos #Mt 4:24 the "touch-stone" of justice; hence inquisition by torture, and then any disease which racks and tortures the limbs.

TORMENT of the wicked

#Lu 16:23 Re 14:11 16:10 18:10 20:10

Hinnom

A deep, narrow ravine separating Mount Zion from the so-called "Hill of Evil Counsel." It took its name from "some ancient hero, the son of Hinnom." It is first mentioned in #Jos 15:8 It had been the place where the idolatrous Jews burned their children alive to Moloch and Baal. A particular part of the valley was called Tophet, or the "fire-stove, "where the children were burned. After the Exile, in order to show their abhorrence of the locality, the Jews made this valley the receptacle of the offal of the city, for the destruction of which a fire was, as is supposed, kept constantly burning there. The Jews associated with this valley these two ideas,

1. that of the sufferings of the victims that had there been sacrificed; and
2. that of filth and corruption. It became thus to the popular mind a symbol of the abode of the wicked hereafter. It came to signify hell as the place of the wicked. "It might be shown by infinite examples that the Jews expressed hell, or the place of the damned, by this word. The word Gehenna (the Greek contraction of Hinnom) was never used in the time of Christ in any other sense than to denote the place of future punishment." About this fact there can be no question. In this sense the word is used eleven times in our Lord's discourses #Mt 23:33 Lu 12:5 Mt 5:22.

Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
